Frequently Asked Questions

What other charges should I expect?
  • Prices posted do not include HST tax (13%) or web fees. Web fees are charges that are incurred for the privilege of using the internet secure booking system and are calculated to be about 6% of the total cost. This would include the Credit Card charges, and the fees charged by Fareharbor for making and running the software that allows all this to happen securely. If you need additional equipment such as sleeping bags or sleeping pads, dry bags or other gear such as kayaks on advanced trips, there may be an additional charge.
  • Yes, kayaks and kayaking equipment are included in all our Category 1 tours and trips.   Only Paddle Canada Level 2 and higher level Category 3 courses assume you have your own kayak. kayak rentals are available as needed.
  • Yes, tents, full kitchen utensils, and tarps are included.  Sleeping bags and sleeping mats are NOT included but can be rented for $20.00 each per trip per person.
  • Typically most of our tours are run in the summer months and so a 2 season bag is adequate.   The issue is more about the packing size than the warmth.   The sleeping bag should fit into a 10 liter dry bag in order to accommodate the packing space in the kayak.   The sleeping mat should be comfortable when in use but pack down to about the size of a loaf of bread.
  • You will be able to inform us about any allergies, food preferences and limitations when you register and when you fill out the “Registration and Release” form accessed from the main menu bar above.
  • Primarily we utilize a “Plant Based” menu with some additions such as fish, eggs and cheese.
  • We have been accommodating vegan diets for many years now.  It’s no problem at all.
  • Yes, we can add some meat to the menu such as deli meats for lunches but the majority of the food will be plant based with plenty of protein to keep us healthy and energetic.
  • If you are concerned about gluten, we can arrange the majority of food as Gluten free for you.  If you are Celiac, then a much stricter food regime is required.   We would ask you to identify this issue before you register so we can discuss the approach we will use and make sure your needs can,  be accommodated.
  • Typically, parking fees are not covered.  Neither are pre-trip accommodations and meals that might be required the night before the trip starts.  Thess costs and their arrangements vary from trip to trip and will be explained in the pre-trip information once you are registered.
  • Generally yes, you get your own tent if you are a single participant.   If you are willing to share a tent with a friend or spouse, that’s great too!  We have a variety of high quality tents for customer use.
  • Yes, generally  you can paddle your own kayak.  Some of our trips will include double kayaks but that is usually at the customer’s request.   Double kayaks are faster, more stable and roomy but less maneuverable than single kayaks.
  • Yes, please bring your own kayak if your own kayak is a SEA kayak and a suitable size to pack your gear and also accommodate group gear.  It must have forward and aft bulkheads or water tight compartments, deck (or perimeter) lines and the cockpit must have a skirt to keep water out.  Generally you should be able to pack all of your gear in one compartment and allow for group gear to be packed in the other watertight compartment. Absolutely. We have a “Bring your own kayak” discount when you register. If you choose to register under the “early bird” discount you can still bring your own kayak but you will not receive a discount for that. You will not have to rent a kayak from us if that option exists in the program you are registered for.
  • We offer a packing list in the information package you will receive after you have registered.   We also have several videos that address this challenge.  You can view them here.
  • Our single kayaks are all at least 16 feet or longer and will fit most body types.  We have boats with rudders or skegs, based on your preference.  If you have concerns about whether the kayak will fit you personally please contact us and discuss your concerns as soon as is reasonable.    Typical issues for fit are individuals under 5’4″, over 6’2″, or have size 12 feet and larger or those with larger hips.   We can almost always find a boat that you will be comfortable in, but it’s really important to address all sizing before the trip begins.
  • If you are new to kayaking and have never taken any lessons, then we strongly recommend you do before coming.  You don’t have to take the lessons with us, as long as you are getting lessons from a reputable  instructor and preferably a certified one.  Paddle Canada, or ORCKA  each have programs with instructors in Ontario.  Paddle Canada has a national program which can be found across the country.  You can also arrange for lessons with Horizons Adventures before the trip.  All our Category 1 trips include basic kayaking preparation but they will not be as extensive as a pre-trip lesson.
  • No, only one discount per registration is available. For an example, If you choose the Early Bird discount you will not be able to get the discount for bringing your own kayak as well. It’s your option to choose the discount that gives you the best value.
